Data Officer - Financial Services (London)

Permanent | Full Time | Hybrid (2-3 days in office) Senior Manager or Manager level (depending on experience)

An established international financial institution is seeking a Data Officer to join its London operation. This newly created role sits within the Risk function with close collaboration across Technology, Operations and Front Office business areas. It offers the opportunity to shape and lead the firm's data governance strategy during a period of organisational growth.

The Role

The Data Officer will be responsible for developing, embedding and overseeing the organisation's data governance, data strategy, data quality and data compliance frameworks. Working closely with senior stakeholders across Risk, IT and the business, you will drive a coordinated, enterprise-wide approach to data management.

Key responsibilities include:

Data Strategy & Governance

  • Develop and lead the rollout of an enterprise-wide data governance strategy.
  • Define the organisation's data governance roadmap and represent best practice.
  • Champion master data management initiatives across shared data domains.

Policies, Standards & Compliance

  • Establish and maintain data governance policies, standards and procedures.
  • Ensure alignment with GDPR and relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with legal, compliance and risk teams on data-related changes.

Data Ownership & Stewardship

  • Define and formalise data ownership/stewardship models.
  • Drive accountability for data quality, integrity and life cycle management.
  • Lead data risk assessments and audits in partnership with Risk teams.

Data Quality Management

  • Define and implement data quality KPIs and controls.
  • Lead initiatives to investigate, resolve and prevent data quality issues.
  • Work with IT and business units to improve accuracy, completeness and consistency.

Data Technology & Reporting

  • Provide input into data technology roadmaps and tooling decisions.
  • Partner with IT teams on evaluation and adoption of data technologies.
  • Deliver regular reporting on data governance metrics to senior management.

About You

Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related field.
  • Additional data, IT or information security certifications desirable.

Experience & Skills

  • 6-8 years' experience in data governance within financial services or a highly regulated environment.
  • Strong expertise in data governance frameworks, regulatory requirements and risk management.
  • Hands-on experience with data management systems, data quality tools, data protection and analytics platforms (eg, data lakes).
  • Knowledge of GDPR, NIST, ISO/IEC 27001 and broader compliance standards.
  • Ability to translate complex technical issues into clear business strategies.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills and ability to build a collaborative data culture.

Desirable

  • Broad understanding of information security principles.
  • Experience supporting global data strategy initiatives
