Senior Ecologist

A well-established multi-disciplinary company are looking for an experienced Senior Ecologist to join their talented team in London. This role offers an exciting chance to work in a supportive and collaborative environment, contributing to a variety of inspiring projects alongside a friendly, multi-disciplinary team. The position provides hybrid working arrangements, requiring a minimum of three days in the office with the option for remote work by agreement. Full training and mentoring will be available to support career progression.

As a Senior Ecologist, you will play a crucial role, which includes:

  • Conducting Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA) and Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA).
  • Leading protected species surveys and designing effective mitigation strategies.
  • Managing species translocation projects and preparing comprehensive management plans.
  • Performing Habitats Regulations Assessments and Biodiversity Net Gain calculations.
  • Collaborating with various disciplines, such as Landscape Architecture and Arboriculture, on planning-led projects.
  • Taking ownership of projects, managing them end-to-end, and preparing fee proposals for major, multi-disciplinary initiatives.
  • Leading on protected species mitigation and licensing efforts.
  • Expanding knowledge of planning, legal, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Developing and pursuing marketing activities to grow ecology work in the East Midlands, London, and the South-East.
  • Conducting fieldwork, including evening, night, and early morning surveys, during peak ecological survey seasons.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A degree in a relevant discipline (or equivalent).
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
  • Experience with European Protected Species (EPS) mitigation licences and/or possession of at least one survey licence (e.g., bats, dormouse, great crested newts, crayfish).
  • Strong knowledge of UK species and habitat legislation.
  • Botanical identification skills and the capability to recognize lowland UK habitat types.
  • A valid UK driving licence and access to a car (highly desirable).
  • The legal right to work in the UK.

Typical Day-to-Day Duties

  • Managing and delivering ecological projects from inception to completion.
  • Conducting field surveys, including early morning or evening work during peak times.
  • Preparing high-quality ecological reports and assessments.
  • Collaborating with internal teams across disciplines to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Offering expert ecological advice to clients and stakeholders.
  • Undertaking risk assessments and maintaining compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Participating in training and continuing professional development (CPD) to remain at the forefront of the field.
