Hydraulic Flood Modeler or Senior Modeler Location: London Overview: My client is seeking a Hydraulic Flood Modeler to join their team, based in London, but working on sites throughout England and Wales for flood risk and river restoration projects. Collaborating closely with the Technical Director, designers, geomorphologists, hydrologists, and fellow modelers, you'll play a key role in delivering Environment Agency (EA) and Natural Resource Wales (NRW) regulated flood modelling and river restoration projects. This position offers the chance to grow your skills in a supportive, dynamic consulting environment, with opportunities for cross-team collaboration across our North (Scotland) and International (currently Ireland and multiple Scandinavian) work areas. In contrast to much other flood modelling they specialize in modelling green and nature based river interventions. Key Responsibilities: Develop and refine hydraulic models, including setup, friction assignment (using site photographs and visits), and flood map preparation using GIS tools. Conduct quality assurance and control (QA/QC) of flood models, ensuring compliance with standards such as the EA Flood Model Assessment Tool. Engage confidently with the EA during model discussions and reviews, representing the team's work with clarity. Collaborate with surveyors on-site to direct data collection essential for accurate modelling. Produce clear, well-written technical reports to communicate findings and recommendations. Work as an active member of the modelling team, contributing to project delivery and sharing insights. Support the Technical Director by providing updates on model setup and QA/QC, while confidently making sensible modelling assumptions. Assist with project tendering and costing, offering input based on your growing expertise. Participate in site visits across England and Wales and attend Southern team offices as needed. Essential Skills and Experience: Ideally a good level of previous experience in 1D-2D flood modelling (e.g., ideally Flood modeler/TUFLOW although other experience may be acceptable), with a solid foundation in hydraulic principles (there is flexibility for the experience they require, and mid and senior level candidates are also of interest). Comfortable engaging with the EA and NRW in model reviews and discussions. Strong GIS skills for setting up hydraulic models and preparing flood maps. Practical experience assigning model frictions using site data and guiding surveyors to collect relevant information. Familiarity with flood model QA/QC processes (experience with tools like the EA Flood Model Assessment Tool is a plus). Enthusiasm for river restoration and nature based solutions alongside flood risk modelling. Good report-writing abilities to produce clear, professional documentation. A team-oriented mind-set, eager to collaborate and learn from others. An appreciation of 2D modelling benefits and a willingness to develop skills in tools like HEC-RAS and TUFLOW HPC. This role will specifically be involved with delivering TUFLOW HPC models, but we expect the candidate to learn 'on the job' for this type of modelling, working closely with Technical Directors. Desirable Skills and Experience: Experience of tendering or costing for consulting projects. Basic understanding of hydrology to support modelling work (no need to lead assessments). Experience with TUFLOW HPC Experience on the use of hydraulic models for bridge scour assessments. Membership (or working towards membership) with a relevant professional body, such as ICE or CIWEM. Full UK Driving licence. What They Offer: A supportive environment under the guidance of Technical Directors, with room to grow your technical and professional skills. An opportunity to use your mathematical and engineering skills to assess the safety and benefits of nature based solutions for river restoration and the water environment. Opportunities to work on diverse, meaningful projects across England and Wales, with occasional collaboration across CBEC's wider UK and international teams. Appointment will be offered at Consultant (£30,750 - £41,000) or Senior Consultant level (£35, 875 -£51,250), depending on the candidate experience.
